A modern reimagination of regal Persia
Text Raïs Saleh

In a striking fusion of history and modernity, “Lay My Love” draws inspiration from the iconic images of Persian royalty and courtesans captured by 19th-century photographer Antoin Sevruguin. Photographed by Marc Himbert and styled by Azza Yousif, the shoot reimagines Sevruguin’s opulent portrayals of Iran’s Qajar court with a contemporary, punk-infused twist.
Madagascan model Ylang Messenguiral brings to life the grandeur and elegance of Sevruguin’s portraits, while adding a raw, rebellious edge to the aesthetic. With references to Persian nobility’s regal attire and poised composure, opulent embroidered blankets and marble fireplaces notwithstanding, the editorial juxtaposes this luxury with elements of modern street culture, evoking a sense of timeless defiance. Messenguiral is seen draped in pieces by Prada, Dries van Noten and Issey Miyake amongst others, with subtle accessories by Cartier elevating the aristocratic-cum-casual glamour.

Sevruguin, renowned for his ability to capture light and texture, had an extraordinary eye for composition, making his work an eternal source of inspiration. This editorial brings his vision into the present, showcasing a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary style.
