The only good system is a sound system

Text Hamza Shehryar

Acclaimed Oscar-winning journalist, producer, and director Joseph Patel sat down with Jamaican pioneers Gabre Selassie and Uncle Ronnie – who designed Sole DXB’s iconic sound system in 2019 – for an in-depth conversation about sound system culture. Together, they explored everything from the technical components of sound system building to its spiritual essence, diving into topics like the history of Jamaican sound systems, the value of projecting unique sounds, and the intersection of style, substance, and culture.

Gabre Selassie reflected on his lifelong connection to music, sharing how mixing and sound culture shaped his journey from childhood, as well as his observations on how styles differ across the globe. Uncle Ronnie traced the origins of the Jamaican sound system back to the working-class neighbourhoods of downtown Kingston, highlighting its roots in resilience and community and how sound system culture extends far beyond certain sounds or even music in general.

Packed with fascinating anecdotes and insights, the discussion was a masterclass in sound system culture, offering a vivid glimpse into the artistry and spirit that drive its global influence.
