Akaar Amin: Reconceptualising the Fashion of Football

The Amsterdam-based designer is crafting a new visual language for the sport through his brand, Lack of Guidance

Text Hamza Shehryar

To Amsterdam-based designer Akaar Amin, football is so much more than kicking a ball for 90 minutes across the pitch. It’s a tapestry of rituals, pride, and belonging that shapes communities and, in many ways, the world at large. Through Lack of Guidance, the Iraqi-Kurdish designer has distilled its essence into a design philosophy, one that’s both nostalgic and forward looking. Infusing football culture into fashion, the clothing brand merges memory with innovation, creative freedom with discipline. What began as a simple frustration โ€“ that football “wasn’t represented properlyโ€ in fashion โ€“ has evolved into one of the most distinctive creative projects to come out of Europe’s underground in recent years.

Amin launched Lack of Guidance almost a decade ago with the conviction that he could close a gap between two worlds that were intertwined, yet rarely spoke to each other within the creative scene. The result: a collection that reframes football as a cultural space rather than just a sport. “The perception of football has shifted in the wrong direction over the past 30 years,” he muses. “It has lost some of its purity and cultural depth. I hope to be one of the pillars that helps reshape that discourse, hence the name.โ€

Trained as a graphic designer, Amin cut his teeth designing for Fantastic Man before establishing himself as a creative force who values tangible results. “The addiction of seeing ideas come to fruition is what drives me,โ€ he continues. And itโ€™s that obsession with process that steers Lack of Guidance’s visual identityโ€”minimalist yet soulful, steeped in heritage but never nostalgic.

Aminโ€™s influences mirror that same balance between intellect and instinct: Johan Cruijff, Dean Blunt, Dirk Bikkembergs, Wim Crouwel, and Jop van Bennekom. Between the precision of Dutch pioneers and trailblazers, the poetry of football, and the irreverence of the avant-garde, each name hints at a different layer of his creative DNA. “If I told myself 10 years ago that I’d be doing what I’m doing today, I probably wouldn’t believe it,” he admits. “But it’s also funny how quickly you get used to things. I always remind myself that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. History shows that overnight success in fashion often leads to a slow downfall.”

That sense of patience defines his outlook. “As long as I can look back at the end of each year and see progress, that’s success to me. Sabr jameel,” he says. Itโ€™s fitting for a designer whose approach is deliberate and enduring. “People from the Middle East are naturally great storytellers,” he adds. “It’s time to reclaim our own narratives and remind the world how beautiful and unique the region and its people are.”
With the World Cup and the brand’s tenth anniversary on the horizon, Amin is entering a new chapter. “We’re transitioning from following the fashion calendar to following the football seasons,” he shares. “It feels like a natural moment to build on what we’ve been doing all along.”
