Ghada Al Subaey: Embodying the Art of Modest Beauty

How the 1309 Studios founder is shaping a new Gulf aesthetic—fluid, poetic, and unapologetically modern

Text Raïs Saleh

Founder and creative director of 1309 Studios, Ghada Al Subaey is part of a generation of Gulf designers reshaping modest fashion. Through thoughtful storytelling, precise silhouettes, and a vision rooted in both femininity and strength, her label has come to embody a distinctly contemporary interpretation of modesty, one that feels tactile and emotionally resonant. “I wanted to create a brand that celebrates women in all their complexity, creativity, and confidence,” Al Subaey explains. “1309 Studios was born from a desire to merge modern design with cultural depth, redefining how modest fashion can feel: expressive, effortless, and empowering.”

Al Subaey’s design language blends a bohemian spirit with architectural restraint—garments that move with the body, often adorned with signature prints developed in collaboration with regional artists. Driven by emotion, she shares, her collections tell stories of nature, self-discovery, and identity. “Each collection starts with an idea, a colour, a feeling, or a moment that evolves into pieces designed to move with the wearer.”

A degree in accounting and an early stint in banking were quickly left behind when Al Subaey followed a deeper calling. Fashion, she realised, was more about communication than ornamentation. 1309 Studios was born not as a commercial project, but as a creative response to a gap, a desire to see modest fashion that was poetic and regionally rooted.  That ethos extends beyond her own collections.

The designer established The Cutting Studio, Qatar’s first premium garment manufacturing and mentorship facility, in 2022. Housed within the M7 creative hub, it supports emerging designers by offering end-to-end production services, mentorship, and a transparent design process. “Every 1309 Studios collection reflects the beauty and spirit of the region,” she says. “The Cutting Studio extends this mission by strengthening Qatar’s creative economy, and building a community that’s grounded in mentorship and craftsmanship.”

Indeed, fostering talent is central to her vision. Whether through The Cutting Studio’s seasonal fashion school, its designer sponsorship programme, or regular workshops with international creatives, Al Subaey is quietly laying the foundation for a more sustainable and self-sufficient fashion ecosystem in the Gulf. “I want to redefine perceptions of modest fashion, to show that it can be progressive, artistic, and globally relevant,” she notes.

Her efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2024, Al Subaey was named a Fashion Innovator by Forbes Middle East and took part in international showcases in London and Paris. Yet, her success is anchored in a consistent commitment to storytelling and community, not trends. Looking ahead, she is focused on expansion—geographically, creatively, and conceptually. Al Subaey’s upcoming collections continue to explore themes of softness and strength, while new ventures into jewellery and lifestyle products are underway.

At the heart of it all, however, remains a simple yet compelling belief that fashion can be both beautiful and purposeful. “I enjoy having my collections invite and welcome people into discovering something within themselves,” she reflects. And in doing so, she invites the region – and the world – to see modest fashion in a new light as a canvas for expression, connection, and quiet transformation.
