In a visionary editorial titled Histoire de l’Oeil — a nod to surrealist inspirations — DAZED collaborated with Dries Van Noten Beauty to showcase the brand’s bold lipsticks in a way that goes beyond traditional beauty shoots. Under the masterful artistry of Aurore Gibrien, a Paris-based makeup virtuoso from Guadeloupe, the shoot takes viewers on an abstract journey through colour and form.

Drawing inspiration from her Caribbean heritage and the vibrancy of carnival celebrations, Gibrien reinterprets the Dries Van Noten lipstick range. Lips, eyes, and skin become a canvas for shades like Punk Vermilion Matte, Abstract Red Sheer, and Cool Brown Matte, harmonised with accents of Graphic Ochre Sheer and the radiant Lovely Lilac Satin.

With a palette that stretches from bold reds to muted browns and experimental tools, it’s a feast of contrasts. Think red tones smeared as eyeshadow or lips adorned with sheer washes of colourthat evoke painterly strokes. The tactile inclusion of blue and pink combs further enhances the shoot’s surreal energy, adding texture to the visual narrative.

Gibrien’s credentials speak to her knack for interpreting beauty unconventionally — she’scollaborated with industry titans like Paolo Roversi and Nadine Ijewere. Here, she amplifies Dries Van Noten Beauty’s ethos: bold, unconfined self-expression.
