In 1999, French hip-hop group 113 released “Les Princes de la Ville,” the title track from their cult classic debut album of the same name. An icon of French rap, the track lays bare life for Black and Brown youth in France’s suburbs: the struggles and dreams, the corruption and hustle—all amplified by DJ Mehdi’s gritty production. “Les Princes de la Ville” honours 113’s home base of Vitry-sur-Seine, but more than that, it is a love letter to the banlieue.

Against the backdrop of the Parisian suburban landscape of Montfermeil, dotted with public housing, graffiti, and kids playing in the streets, Pascal Gambarte shot models Nazarit Machin and Peris Adolwi. Styled by Dazed’s own Fashion Director, Omaima Salem pays homage to the Parisian suburb, from its fashion and architecture to the ingenuity and diversity of its people.
Echoing 113, the shoot captures the pride and ego of representing one’s city, “Et même si c’est pas tous les jours facile, j’veux être le prince de ma ville.”
